My name is Mullijin and I was born in Broome, Western Australia in 1961 to an Aboriginal family. My family belong to three tribal groups, the Jawi, Bardi and Nyul Nyul from the Dampier Peninsular in the southern outskirts of the Kimberlys, Western Australia.
I have enjoyed painting all my life. In the beginning I painted mostly on pottery, but in later years I steadily evolved my own individual style on canvas. Much of my childhood was spent living a very traditional Aboriginal life-style of hunting and gathering and this enabled me to learn to paint many of the Australian animals. I like to use traditional earth colours of yellow, red, black and white on interesting textured background using dots and symbolic depictions of water and land. British Telecom in England commissioned my art on handcrafted wooden bowls.
I have also painted a large mural on a wall at the Hambledon State School as one of my community projects in 1999. In 2003 I had an exhibition and in 2004 another exhibition titled "Waterways" which was held during "Peace Week". My work is sought after by several Australian galleries. I hope to keep our culture alive through my paintings and stories.
